Your first week in the UK will feel exciting, busy and slightly overwhelming. You will be adjusting to a new country while trying to settle into student life. To make things easier, here is a friendly guide to help you get through your first few days with confidence.

1. Sort Out Your Essentials First

Before you start exploring, get your basics done.
You will need a local SIM card, your BRP collection and a bank account. These are the things that help you stay connected and move around without stress.

You can pick up a SIM card at the airport or any convenience store. Popular choices include giffgaff, EE and O2. Once you have data, everything becomes easier.

If you need to collect your BRP, check your letter for the exact location. Go early so you do not get stuck in long queues.

2. Learn How Public Transport Works

The UK has reliable public transport, but it can feel confusing at first.
Spend a little time figuring out how buses and trains work in your area. Apps like Citymapper and Trainline will help you plan routes and check timings.

If you are in London, get an Oyster card or use contactless. If you are outside London, look up local bus passes. Knowing how to get around will make your first week feel much smoother.

3. Explore Your Neighbourhood

Take a walk around your new area.
Find the nearest grocery store, pharmacy and bus stop. You will feel more settled once you know where to buy snacks, toiletries and quick meals.

Most students shop at Tesco, Sainsbury’s or Aldi. If you want Asian ingredients, look for local Asian supermarkets. They are usually close by even if they are not obvious at first.

4. Join Orientation Activities

Orientation week is the easiest time to meet people.
Everyone is new and everyone is looking for friends. Join campus tours, welcome talks and society booths. Even if you are shy, showing up helps you feel included.

Start with simple conversations. A quick “Hi, where are you from” is enough to make a connection.

5. Set Up Your Accommodation

Your room might feel empty at first.
Spend some time making it comfortable. Get bedding, hangers and basic kitchen items. Stores like Primark, IKEA and Wilko are popular with students.

You do not need to buy everything at once. Start with essentials and slowly build your space.

6. Try Local Food and Explore the City

Your first week is a great time to try something new.
Grab fish and chips, visit a local cafe or explore a nearby park. You do not need to travel far. Small neighbourhood spots can be fun and relaxing.

If you need halal food, check Google Maps or ask seniors. Most UK cities have plenty of options.

7. Take It Slow and Be Kind to Yourself

Moving to a new country is a big step.
You might feel excited one moment and overwhelmed the next. It is normal. Take breaks, rest well and give yourself time to adjust.

Your first week is not about doing everything perfectly. It is about settling in, learning your surroundings and easing into your new life.
